What is exfoliation and what does it do for your skin?

Exfoliation may sound complicated, but it's actually quite natural. This process simply helps your skin shed dead skin cells, which naturally occurs. However, factors like aging or acne might need a bit of assistance with this process.

An exfoliant, a product containing gentle acids, enzymes, or fine granules, breaks the bonds between dead skin cells in the outer layer of the skin. This allows them to shed more easily, making room for new, fresh skin cells. Moreover, it stimulates cell renewal, giving your skin a radiant appearance.

Don't worry, it won't make your skin thinner! In fact, a good exfoliant gives your skin exactly what it needs to be its best. Regular use in your skincare routine is recommended for better absorption of your skincare products.

Why use an exfoliant?

Your skin renews itself continuously, roughly every 30 days. During this process, the top layer of the skin (the epidermis) sheds, making way for new skin cells from the middle layer (the dermis). However, this process doesn't always go smoothly. Sometimes, dead skin cells remain, leading to dull skin, dry patches, and clogged pores.

Using this method, you give this natural process a helping hand. It effectively removes dead skin cells, leaving your skin looking fresh and radiant. Additionally, exfoliation offers a range of benefits for your face:

  • Smoother skin texture
  • Fewer clogged pores
  • A radiant complexion
  • Reduction of pigmentation spots
  • Better absorption of serums and creams

Moreover, exfoliation stimulates cell renewal, contributing to a healthy and glowing complexion. This way, you ensure your skin looks its best and can fully benefit from your skincare products!

What is the difference between exfoliating and scrubbing?

Exfoliating and scrubbing may seem similar, but there are important differences:

  • Scrubbing is a form of physical exfoliation where you use a gritty texture, like a scrub, to slough off dead skin cells. This method works quickly and effectively but can also damage healthy skin cells if the granules are too coarse or if you scrub too hard.
  • Exfoliating with a chemical exfoliant is a gentler alternative. Ingredients such as AHAs (alpha hydroxy acids) and BHAs (beta hydroxy acids) are used to dissolve the 'glue' between dead skin cells. This allows the cells to shed without affecting the healthy skin. The result? Smoother skin without unnecessary irritation.

In summary: scrubbing is a physical approach, while chemical exfoliation is more subtle and often safer for your skin.

Exfoliating your face: 6 simple steps!

Proper use is important to prevent skin irritation and to fully benefit from the advantages. Follow these steps:

  1. First, thoroughly cleanse your face with The Cleanser.
  2. Apply the exfoliating product to clean, dry skin.
  3. Gently massage the product in and leave it on for a few minutes.
  4. Rinse it off with lukewarm water.
  5. After exfoliating, use The Day Formula or The Night Formula for the best results.
  6. Finish with the rest of your skincare routine to optimally care for your skin.

How often to use?

Start with 1 to 2 times per week and gradually increase usage. Initially, you might experience a slight tingling sensation and some redness. Give your skin time to adjust and avoid over-exfoliating, as this can damage your skin barrier.

Tip: Use it on other areas too!

Did you know you can also use an exfoliant for calluses? If you have calluses on your hands, feet, or elbows, exfoliate using a product with salicylic acid. This removes dead skin cells and prevents new calluses.

Apply a moisturizing cream to the areas afterward, preferably on slightly damp skin, for instance after a shower. You'll notice that the calluses come off more easily.

The best products for your skin type

The right exfoliant depends on your skin type to avoid irritation and to optimally care for your skin. We’re happy to help with an overview of the best exfoliants for each skin type!

Normal skin

If you have normal skin, you can use almost any type, depending on your preference. Alternate between AHAs for skin renewal and BHAs for a deeper cleanse. This helps keep your skin in top condition.

Dry skin

For dry skin, a gentle and hydrating exfoliant is most suitable. Choose products that not only exfoliate but also nourish the skin with ingredients such as lactic acid or glycerin. This helps prevent the skin from feeling tight or flaky.

Sensitive skin

For sensitive skin, it’s important to use a mild exfoliant. Choose a peel with AHAs, such as glycolic acid or lactic acid. These gently remove dead skin cells without irritating the skin. A good example is The AHA Peel, which gives your skin a fresh appearance.

Oily skin

For oily skin, exfoliants with salicylic acid, niacinamide, or zinc are ideal. They help regulate sebum production and reduce shine, keeping your skin matte and fresh. This prevents pores from becoming clogged and the formation of new blemishes.

Combination skin

For combination skin, you want to address both dry patches and reduce excess oil. A combination of AHAs and BHAs is ideal. This effectively treats the different zones of your face, keeping the skin balanced and preventing blemishes.

Anti-aging

For mature skin, a product with AHAs, such as glycolic acid, is ideal. It stimulates cell renewal and reduces fine lines, making the skin appear smoother and fresher. Regular use ensures a youthful appearance and an even complexion.
